Fluorescent Light Bulb Recycling

Allen County recycled over 140 miles of fluorescent bulbs.  Enough to stretch across the State of Indiana!

Fluorescent light bulbs contain a pen tip amount of mercury, a nerve toxin that affects the way an individual functions.  Broken fluorescent bulbs can release mercury in landfills and contaminate the air we breathe, as well as poison our waterways and the foods we eat.  Click here to learn how to clean up a broken bulb in your home.

The Allen County Solid Waste Management District, in partnership with Sears, Connolly's & Umbers Do It Best Centers and Grabill Hardware, operates a year-round Fluorescent Light Bulb Collection Program.  Allen County residents are encouraged to bring their fluorescent bulbs to specially marked containers located at the Merchandise Pick-up area at Sears; or, to the service desk at Connolly's & Umber's Do-It-Best Centers and Grabill Hardware.  Sears accepts only 4 foot bulbs.  Connolly's & Umber's Do It Best Centers, as well as Grabill Hardware, accepts bulbs up to 8 foot in length and CFL's.  All other sizes of fluorescent bulbs are accepted at Tox-Away Day, the District's annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection event.  View our video.
